7.0 Quake Off Padang

I just sent this blast:

A 0.6m tsunami hit Padang beaches about 12 minutes after a 7.0 (USGS) quake struck mid way between Siberut Island and the city. The quake was preceded by a loud growling sound then followed by a strong vertical vibration coupled with a slow horizontal shake. An evacuation warning was issued by the city administration. Island Aid HQ shook hard but there was no damage. Power and phone services were not disrupted and the evacuation of coastal areas appeared to be orderly and smooth in the southern part of the city.

Aftershocks continue to keep the population on edge but we can see vehicles returning to Air Manis village below us now that the tsunami danger is past.

I'm very glad to learn that y'all are alright, with no apparent damage and safe evacuations.

Please, take all good care.

The USGS have downgraded the 7.0 quake to 6.7 but show it as shallower by 10 km. Since the first big one we have had 15 quakes over 4.5 and 10 over 5.0. The epicenters are moving west and the last cluster were almost directly under Muara Siberut. We expect some damage as the town is built on a river delta. Most buildings are single story and of light weight construction so the potential for injuries is much lower in the Mentawais than in Nias. It is 4.30am and the constant shaking is proving way better than coffee at keeping us awake. We have not managed to raise anyone in Muara Siberut on the phone so far.

Watching this intently from San Francisco. Sounds like Padang is OK. Give word when you hear about the islands. Is anyone staying at the resorts? E-Bay, HTs?

Rick & All,

I continue to see via various reports that y'all are still rockin' and rollin'.

Stay safe ~

Jessan
